Professional/Products Liability Insurance
Markel Shand markets professional liability insurance. Our primary focus is coverages that can be tailored to offer insurance solutions for highly specialized professionals. These include medical malpractice insurance for physicians and allied healthcare risks, and professional liability insurance for lawyers, architects and engineers, insurance companies, agents and brokers, and management consultants. The miscellaneous errors and omissions coverage is targeted to start-ups, small businesses and emerging technologies.
Products liability insurance is also offered, once again, with a specialization that focuses on new businesses' new products and new technology, especially medical-related companies. In addition, for-profit and not-for-profit directors and officers liability coverage and employment practices liability coverages are offered.
The Professional/Products Liability unit was one of the first to enter the emerging employment practices liability insurance (EPLI) market. The unit provides a full menu of loss prevention programs offering consultation services to all customers that can be accessed through telephone inquiry, Internet and live seminars across the country. EPLI provides coverage for the defense of alleged inappropriate employment practices not typically covered under traditional business insurance programs. While virtually all businesses have a need for this coverage, Markel Shand designed its EPLI program for mid-sized firms with 25 to 250 employees, as this niche appears to be the most underserved by other insurers.
Business is written throughout the United States and is developed through approximately 350 wholesale brokers. The Professional/ Products Liability unit writes the majority of its business with Evanston Insurance Company (EIC). EIC is admitted in Illinois and is eligible to write E&S insurance in 50 states and the District of Columbia. Admitted programs for these coverages are written with Deerfield Insurance Company, Markel American Insurance Company, and Markel Insurance Company.

This "one-stop shopping" team approach gives broker customers the convenience of interacting with only one individual, while still being able to access the resources of all of Shand's highly experienced underwriters.
One of the most powerful resources we offer our brokers is access to their own proprietary broker Web site, which gives them access to Shand 24 hours a day allowing our producers to submit and clear risks, rate and price certain products and request all of our forms and documents.
Our form. With few exceptions, all of our policy forms are written on a claims made or claims made and reported basis.
Limits. $5,000,000/$5,000,000 limits are available on the majority of our products. Higher limits may be available upon request.
Admitted business. EPLI, E&O, and Non-Profit D&O are available on an admitted basis in select states.
